Chapter Thirteen

GARYCK

As I sifted through the haze in my mind, I could not decide what hurt more; the throbbing in my head or the sharp pain where I’d been jabbed in the side with the stun stick. Something shackled around my wrist hindered my attempt to raise my arm and rub my temples.

I forced my eyelids open and found myself lying on a cold, hard floor and chained to a nearby wall, the length too short to allow standing. Ignoring the stiffened muscles in my back, I rolled into a sitting position, then took in my surroundings.

Zapharite stones had been mounted on two of the walls. They provided enough light for me to see that the room was small, had no panes, and resembled the interior of the holding cell back at the settlement.

A single door was the only way in or out and was most likely braced from the outside. The interior had not been designed for comfort. The only piece of furniture was a wooden chair sitting on the opposite side of the room and out of reach.

The relief I felt at not finding Sloane with me quickly faded. Just because she was not being held in this room did not mean she had not been captured.

Escape would have been easy if my blades had not been confiscated, including the dagger I kept in my boot. Frustrated by my current situation and the overwhelming need to find her, I fisted my hands around the chains and pulled as hard as I could. The wall mount groaned but after several attempts, refused to budge.

I heard scraping on the outside of the door and tensed. I assumed it was Sarus and some of his males returning to question me, which would escalate to torture since I would not supply them with any answers. The chains were short and prevented me from standing to my full height, but I refused to let that keep me from defending myself.

Night had arrived during my unconscious state. A darkened silhouette was all I could see of the person, much shorter than I had expected, standing in the doorway. A few seconds later, Sloane stepped inside. “Garyck.” Her sweet voice echoed through the room.

“Little one,” I said. “You are unharmed?”

She propped a long, rectangular board against the inside wall and closed the door. “Of course, I’m not hurt.” I had never been happier to hear the sarcasm in her voice or have her roll those beautiful blue eyes at me. “But obviously, you’re not.” She glanced around the room, then continued inside. “What the draeck were you thinking, going after Sarus like that?” She punched my shoulder.

I had already chastised myself for lacking better judgment and would gladly endure any additional scolding she was prepared to give me.

“You could’ve been killed.”

Her anger was laced with caring as if my foolish actions had caused her a great deal of pain. “I—”

“Save it,” she said, cutting me off. “We don’t have time to discuss it right now.” Sloane retrieved the dagger from her boot.
